Payson High students celebrate prom with a ‘Footloose’ theme

In a whirlwind of neon lights and ‘80s beats, Payson High School students danced the night away at their annual prom, held this year with a nostalgic ‘Footloose’ theme.

The event, held at the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Downtown, transported attendees back to the era of big hair, vibrant fashion, and the timeless music of Kevin Bacon’s iconic dance film.

The excitement was palpable as students arrived, dressed to impress in an array of retro-inspired outfits.

From bold neon hues to classic denim and leather jackets, each ensemble paid homage to the iconic style of the 1980s.

Couples posed for photos against backdrops adorned with neon graffiti and vintage boomboxes, capturing memories that will last a lifetime.

Inside the ballroom, the scene was straight out of a John Hughes film, with neon lights casting a colorful glow over the dance floor.

DJ Vinyl Scratch, a local favorite known for his eclectic mix of old-school jams, kept the energy

high with hits from the likes of Michael Jackson, Madonna, and of course, Kenny Loggins’ unforgettable anthem, “Footloose.”

“The ‘Footloose’ theme was a brilliant choice,” remarked senior class president, Sarah Rodriguez.

“It’s all about breaking free, letting loose, and having a great time with your friends. That’s exactly what prom should be about.”

Throughout the evening, students indulged in a variety of activities, including a photo booth stocked with props straight out of the ‘80s,

a candy bar featuring retro sweets like Pop Rocks and Pixy Stix, and even a makeshift arcade area complete with classic video games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong.

For many students, prom was not only a chance to dance and socialize but also an opportunity to give back to their community.

As part of the event, the Payson High Student Council organized a charity raffle, with proceeds going towards the school’s drama department to fund their upcoming production of “Grease.”

Prizes included concert tickets, gift cards to local restaurants, and even a vintage-style record player donated by a generous local business.

“It’s important to remember that prom isn’t just about us,” said junior class treasurer, David Nguyen.

“It’s about coming together as a community and supporting each other, whether that’s

through charity fundraisers or simply sharing a dance with someone who might not have a date.”

As the night drew to a close, students gathered for the crowning of the prom king and queen.

After a tense round of applause, the titles were awarded to Jake Thompson and Emily Sullivan,

both of whom were met with cheers and applause from their peers.

Reflecting on the evening, Principal Rebecca Martinez expressed her pride in the student body and their

ability to come together to create a memorable and inclusive event.

“Prom is a celebration of not only the end of another school year but also of the bonds and friendships that make Payson High such a special place,” Martinez said.

“Tonight was a testament to the creativity, spirit, and kindness of our students, and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this community.”

As the final notes of “Footloose” filled the air and students bid farewell to the Grand Ballroom,

it was clear that the memories made at this year’s prom would be cherished for years to come.

And though the night may have ended, the spirit of ‘80s nostalgia and camaraderie would live on in the hearts of Payson High students for years to come.
